Baseball Legend Shohei Ohtani Is Coming To Fortnite
Los Angeles Dodgers three-time MVP Shohei Ohtani is coming to Fortnite. As a part of the game’s upcoming March 17 update, players will be able to purchase Ohtani outfits, accessories, emotes and more in the in-game shop. Though not the first athlete to hit the battle-royale title, Ohtani does mark the first-ever Major League Baseball player to come to the game.
The MLB announced the news via its official blog, writing, “Global sensations in the world of baseball and video games are about to collide.” The post then shared a first look not just at Ohtani’s standard skin, but his Lego Fortnite look and Samurai Shohei skin as well. Ohtani fans will be pleased to note that a bobblehead based on Shohei’s famous pup, Decoy, will also be available to purchase.
For those eager to get their hands on the Samurai Shohei skin a bit early, the post also announced that the Shohei Ohtani Cup–a solo Battle Royale tournament–will take place this Saturday, March 16. The top points-earning players in each region will unlock the Samurai Shohei outfit ahead of its official release.
The news comes shortly after well-known Fortnite leaker Shiina posted that Ohtani will show up with the game’s next update. The power hitter (and pitcher) had also been teased with promotional posters in Japan that highlight his jersey number: 17.
Ohtani joins an impressive roster of athletes-turned-Fortnite skins. Soccer player Neymar Jr. appeared in the battle-royale title in 2021; NBA star LeBron James arrived in 2021 as well; NFL star Patrick Mahomes was brought to the game in 2022; and Shaq showed up a few months ago in October.
In other Fortnite news, last week a new class-action lawsuit was reportedly filed against Fortnite in California and Texas regarding “fake countdown timers” that allegedly were utilized in the item shop years ago. Meanwhile, last month saw the introduction of Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 2. It’s called Lawless and brought GTA-like map changes to the battle-royale game.
Fortnite is one of 10 live-service games that dominates US playtime on PlayStation and Xbox platforms.
