Yoko Taro’s 404 Game Re:set Reimagines Sega As An Evil Overlord At War With Its Own Games

Nier series writer-director Yoko Taro has officially unveiled his new mobile game for iOS and Android that will be published under Sega, 404 Game Re:set. Set in an alternate reality where an evil version of Sega rose to the top of the business world and now rules the globe with an iron fist, players will take control of classic Sega games that have been reimagined as women.

“From infrastructure to entertainment, Sega reigns supreme in all areas,” the synopsis for 404 Game Re:set reads. “Cast has the power to alter the real space. By brainwashing and using the Cast, Sega rewrote the world to its advantage.”

Only Sega’s cult-classic games, now sporting their own personalities and Cast powers, can save the day, and the initial roster includes humanized versions of Virtua Cop, After Burner, OutRun, and Virtua Fighter. Creative director Yoko Taro added that he wanted Sega to have a presence in the game, but he didn’t think the company would want to be portrayed in a positive light, hence the brand’s turn to the dark side in 404 Game Re:set.

To promote the mobile title, Sega has also created a 404 Game Re:set Twitter account that reveals more of the game’s lore from an in-universe viewpoint. “Sega is trying to deceive and control people,” the account’s first tweet reads. “This account was opened to reveal the truth. I want to deliver the truth hidden by Sega to as many people as possible. Please help spread the word. Let’s take back the original world from Sega.”

An international release for 404 Game Re:set has yet to be announced, so for now, it looks to be a Japanese mobile exclusive. If you are looking for something that bears Yoko Taro’s signature weirdness to fill that void in your life, you can check out his recent puppet show that was made in collaboration with rock band Amazarashi. The 15-minute video retells the story of Nier Automata itself, and was released when the Nier Automata anime went on hiatus.
