Minecraft Movie: Release Date, Cast, Director, And Everything Else To Know

This is one of the biggest unknowns about the Minecraft movie. The Minecraft series isn’t known for its narrative. In fact, the fact that Minecraft has no story is part of the appeal. You can do anything, be anything, and build anything you want in Minecraft, and the community has come up with some incredibly impressive creations over the years.

2015’s Minecraft: Story Mode from Telltale Games introduced some story elements to the Minecraft universe. However, it remains to be seen what the story could be all about in the Minecraft movie. A plot synopsis floating around the internet suggests the story could involve a young girl and her unlikely group of friends battling against the evil Ender Dragon, though whether or not this plot is accurate or up to date is unknown.

Director Jared Hess said in an interview that when he took the job, he believed there was a “fun, ridiculous movie” to be made out of Minecraft, and in the end “there is,” he said.

The Minecraft movie features Jack Black, Jennifer Coolidge, Jason Momoa, Kate McKinnon, Danielle Brooks, Jemaine Clement, Emma Meyers, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen. We don’t know for sure who these actors are playing, but Black is rumored to be playing Steve.

There is no trailer for the Minecraft movie as of yet. Filming only just wrapped up on April 11. But with the film expected to release in theaters in April 2025, fans can likely expect a trailer to arrive at least six months before then. Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest.

The Minecraft movie is directed by Jared Hess. He is perhaps best known for directing the oddball 2004 movie Napoleon Dynamite, along with Nacho Libre (which starred Black). Prior to Hess coming aboard, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney was attached to direct the Minecraft movie and got Warner Bros. to give him $150 million to make it. But after Warner Bros. had a leadership change, the new management didn’t want McElhenney’s movie. Before McElhenney, Shawn Levy was attached and he pitched a Goonies-style adventure film. Mojang, which owns the Minecraft franchise, vetoed the idea and Levy moved on.

Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer wrote the screenplay for the Minecraft movie.

The Minecraft movie is set for release on April 4, 2025.

The Minecraft movie was filmed in New Zealand, and leaks from the soundstages reveal entire trees made to look like they were made out of blocks with right angles. Continuing the New Zealand theme, the production designer for the Minecraft movie is none other than Grant Major, a New Zealand-based film legend who won an Oscar for The Lord of the Rings.

Danielle Brooks told Variety that she and Black, both accomplished and impressive voice talents, will probably do some singing in the Minecraft movie. “You can’t do a movie with Danielle Brooks and Jack Black and not have us do something,” Brooks said.
