Fortnite OG Chapter 1 Season 1 is taking the game all the way back to the beginning, to a time when Epic’s mega-popular platform was merely a survival game testing the waters of battle royale. With this relaunch of Fortnite OG, which was previously a one-month special event in 2023, the game’s original island is returning–but this time, it’s here to stay; Fortnite OG is a new permanent mode in the game.
It will be filled with all the same sights and sounds–and weapons–as before. There will even be a new Fortnite OG battle pass–simply called the OG Pass. However, there will also be a few noticeable differences between this version of early Fortnite and the real thing back in 2017. For those not feeling nostalgic, Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 1 also just launched a few days ago and brings players to a Japan-inspired island full of shogun bosses, forest ghosts, and supernatural masks that have quickly become a fan-favorite loot item.
Here’s everything you need to know about Fortnite OG Chapter 1 Season 1.
When does Fortnite OG start?
Fortnite OG begins (again) on December 6. This launch version will reflect Chapter 1 Season 1 from 2017, and future seasons of Chapter 1 will come to the game mode, too.
Fortnite OG Pass for Chapter 1 Season 1
Like in the main battle royale mode, some players like the battle pass more than anything else. Luckily for those players, Fortnite OG has its very own 45-tier battle pass called the OG Pass.
This pass includes three new characters inspired by faces from Fortnite’s past, and each comes with alternate styles and accessories, as well as gliders that resemble the classic Chapter 1 look.

Fortnite OG weapons in Chapter 1 Season 1
OG players want OG weapons, and those are coming back, of course. This includes not just a long list of classic guns, but also trap items, which haven’t really been seeing in Fortnite in several years now, save for special events like last year’s OG mini-season.
The full list of weapons and loot on launch day for Fortnite OG includes the following blasts from the past:
- Assault Rifle
- Burst Assault Rifle
- Scoped Assault Rifle
- Pump Shotgun
- Tactical Shotgun
- Pistol
- Revolver
- Submachine Gun
- Tactical Machine Gun
- Bolt-Action Sniper Rifle
- Semi-Auto Sniper Rifle
- Grenade Launcher
- Rocket Launcher
- Damage Trap
- Ceiling Zapper
- Wall Dynamo
Traps will also be available in Zero Build, meaning you won’t need to crank 90s in that mode, but you can still catch unsuspecting enemies walking into a human-sized bug zapper by setting up traps where they fit in prefab structures.
Epic said more items will be unvaulted as the season unfolds, too. Because this is a mostly faithful recreation of Chapter 1 Season 1, you shouldn’t expect anything from later seasons–not yet anyway. Those seasons will get their own updates later in OG mode.
Fortnite OG map
More than anything, what makes Fortnite OG authentic is the island itself. In Fortnite OG Chapter 1 Season 1, Epic says it paid extremely close attention to the details, and that you can expect “every tree, chest, car, and object is right where players remember it,” though the developer also revealed that ziplines and ascenders have been added in Zero Build mode to accommodate those players, since the very open, often flatter map can be harder to survive on without build mechanics.
For those looking to refresh their memory, walk down memory lane, or perhaps discover the OG map for the first time, we’ve included a picture of it above, as well as a list of the named locations below.
- Pleasant Park
- Anarchy Acres
- Wailing Woods
- Tomato Town
- Lonely lodge
- Dusty Depot
- Retail Row
- Greasy Grove
- Salty Springs
- Flush Factory
- Fatal Fields
- Moisty Mire
What’s different in Fortnite OG Chapter 1 Season 1?
Though Fortnite OG is largely faithful to the original 2017 experience, some changes have been made–such as the introduction of Zero Build and its aforementioned ziplines and ascenders for ease of exploration.
In addition to that, other quality-of-life changes will be reflected in Fortnite OG. This includes things like modern building mechanics that are different from how 2017-era players may recall them. Players can also do things such as sprint, slide, mantle, move while healing, and bash doors open while sprinting through them.
These maneuvers weren’t present originally, but it seems Epic now finds them to be necessary to showing what Fortnite is today, even as it looks back on yesteryear.
Epic said some rough spots of the original game have been left as is, while others have been updated. For example, Reboot Vans will be present across the island even though they weren’t originally there, while max building resources have been capped at 999 pieces.
The double pump shotgun meta, which allows players to swap between two pump shotguns rather than reload or wait out the fire rate of just one of them, will be there at launch of Fortnite OG, though Epic hinted that this technique is there “for now,” meaning it’s open to changing or removing this feature if it proves to be problematic.
In Fortnite OG, only solo and squads queues will be available–at least for now. It seems sometimes Epic changes course on this detail according to player feedback. Ranked OG mode is coming later this season, too, giving the game what will surely be its sweatiest lobbies of them all.
When does Fortnite OG Chapter 1 Season 1 end?
Fortnite’s first mini-season of its newly permanent OG mode will come to a close on January 31, 2025. That means you’ll have until then to earn everything in the OG Pass.
It’s likely that very soon after, Fortnite OG Chapter 1 Season 2 will begin.
